AMA Flat Track District Letter Assignments
1947-Present

District letters were introduced by the AMA in 1947 to assign a unique number to each one of the 1,600 professional racers in the country.
100 racers were selected each year for a "Straight Number" (a.k.a. "National Number").
All the others were assigned a one, two, or three digit number with a "district letter" after it.
The "district letter" identified the racer's home state, or region.

Historian Bob Herrick compiled the lists below, showing how the district letter assignments changed over the years.
