2009 DAIRYLAND CLASSIC - June 5, 2009

Jammin' Jared Mees completed an unprecedented clean sweep of the 25th annual Dairyland Classic dirt track motorcycle races presented by the Wisconsin Harley-Davidson Dealers Association by claiming the fast qualifying time, recording the fastest heat race win, winning the Jim Sumner Memorial Dash for Cash, and finally claiming the victory in the 20-lap Pro Main event. Jared led his heat race from start-to-finish to put him on the pole for the main event, but the Dash for Cash and Main Events would not be as easy.

Thirty-three professional riders from eleven states, including seventeen National Numbers, took to the immaculately prepared 1/3-mile clay oval. Mees recorded the fastest qualifying lap of 16.655 seconds (72.050mph) was well off Nick Cummings’ 2007 record of 15.311 (78.375 mph). Sammy Halbert (17.769 sec), Kenny Coolbeth (16.789 sec), JR Schnabel (17.792 sec) and Jethro Halbert (16.797 sec) rounded out the top five in qualifying. Half the field was within a half second of Mees’ time.

Polesitters Mees, Sammy Halbert, and Kenny Coolbeth won the three heat races, with Jake Mataya, Henry Wiles, and Jesse Janisch winning the three semis.

The Dash For Cash puts the qualifiers in an inverted, staggered start, so Mees, by nature of his fast qualifying time, started at the rear, behind Sammy Halbert (second fast qualifier), Jake Mataya (10th fast qualifier), DJ Slosser (17th qualifier) and Aaron King (26th qualifier). At the flash of the green light, Slosser grabbed the holeshot and led Halbert and Mees at the end of the first lap. Halbert and Mees dove under Slosser heading into turn 3, and the two of them began to pull away. Mees got a great drive out of turn two on the penultimate lap and dove under Halbert heading into turn 3. Halbert was unable to retaliate and Mees claimed his second Jim Sumner Memorial Dash for Cash Win in three years (he missed winning last year’s Dash by 0.009 seconds). He also became the first person to win the Dash from the rear starting position. Sammy Halbert grabbed the holeshot in the twenty-lap professional main event with brother Jethro Halbert, JR Schnabel, and Mees in tight formation directly behind. The order remained unchanged for thirteen laps, as Sam's higher line in the corners was enough to keep Jethro at bay. Exiting turn 4 on lap 12, Mees started his charge, diving low under Schnabel to take over third place as they entered turn one. One lap later, Mees repeated the move out of four to take second away from Jethro Halbert as they entered turn one, but Mees could not hold the position as Halbert knifed back underneath as they exited turn two. Mees would not be denied and dove back under Halbert going into turn one the next time by and grabbed second for good. Two laps later, Mees showed Sammy Halbert a wheel exiting turn four but couldn’t make it stick. As they exited turn four to take Mike Vrana's white flag, Mees timed his move to perfection to steal the lead entering turn one. Halbert would not go quietly, however, and the two riders bumped at the apex of turn 3. The contact pushed Mees wide, while Halbert dove low as they raced to the checkers. Mess held on to take the victory by less than a wheel-length.

Ray Manion grabbed the holeshot in the Quad Main event, leading Rob Reitz, Chad Jesko, and Chad Romenesko after one lap. Jesko charged to the front on the following lap and was never headed to the finish. Reitz dropped to sixth at the finish, behind Manion, Romenesko, and Matt Schmitz.

Charlotte Kainz became the first rider to successfully defend their class win with a dominating win in the 85cc Youth division. Austin Reifsnider kept Kainz in his sights the entire main, but was never able to mount a serious challenge for the win. Jacob Jesko, Parker Lange, and Alec Muth waged a serious battle for third, finishing in that order.

In the 250cc Amateur Division, Trey Johnson grabbed the holeshot and held the position for two laps before giving way to Jake Cunningham. On lap four, Conner Anderson and Jayson Beal moved under Johnson heading into turn one, with contact between Beal and Johnson sending Johnson to the ground, which brought out the red flag. On the restart, Anderson charged past Cunningham to take the lead. Anderson held on to win over Cunningham, with Zach Rosine holding off Beal for third.

In the Vintage Main event, Yamaha-mounted Erich Olson led the first three laps before giving way to Triumph-mounted Danny Vrana, who wrecked his Harley KR750 in his heat race. Lee Johnson overcame a poor start to take over third place on the fourth lap from Louie Lauters, who eventually finished fifth behind Art Mischler.
