Major Accomplishments By Women in Flat Track Racing |
|
July 25, 1968: 16-year-old Debbi Selden is featured in a "Meet The Racer" article by Delmer O. Gasche in Cycle News West.
The article states that Debbi has sent a petition to the AMA, requesting that she be granted a Class C professional license when she turns 18 next April, but that the AMA
"don't even want to discuss it....I want to race professionally though and I don't really understand why the AMA doesn't want women to compete with the men on an equal basis.
Women compete in many sports. If a person really wants to do something and there is no physical or mental reasons why he shouldn't do it, then I feel he should be allowed to do it.
The fact that I'm a girl doesn't seem to me to be a good reason for barring me from a professional license'." (Cycle News West, July 25, 1968). |
|
|
April 1969: Debbi Selden turns 18 years of age and applies for an AMA Pro Racing license. She is denied a license, and she files a lawsuit.(Cycle News East June 2, 1970). |
August 15, 1969: Kitty Budris (Chicago, IL) tunes the BSA that carries Don Castro to the Amateur final win at the Sante Fe Short Track National. Kitty is not allowed into the pit area, however, because women are not allowed into the pits. (Cycle News East January 27, 1970). |
|
|
May 1970: The Pierce County (Washington) Superior Court rules in favor of Debbi Selden who was refused
a professional license by the AMA in April 1969.
Debbi is quoted as saying that "I have wanted to race professionally since I was 14.
I reached a stage in motorcycling where I felt I was qualified to be a professional, but that unfair regulation barred me,
even though my qualifications and experience were greater than some men." (Cycle News East June 2, 1970).
Another article reports "Washington State Superior Court judge Robert Jacques ruled that the exclusion of women
from American Motorcycle Association professional racing was not compatible with the laws of the state of Washington and that
Miss Selden could ask for injunctions to stop any AMA activity which the AMA declares her ineligible for solely because of her sex.
The AMA argument that the Court didn't have jurisdiction over an out-of-state corporations policies was set aside by Judge Jacques.
Their other defenses were ineffective." (Motorcycle Weekly, May 18, 1970).
|
July 1, 1970: The AMA appeals the Piece County Superior Court decision.
The AMA representative, Joe Gordon, Jr., warns that it will likely be nine months before the case will be presented to the State Court of Appeals, Division 2, at the Tacoma Mall Bulding.
Debbi has sent her check to the AMA "about a month and a half ago for a license but I never received any word."
AMA District Referee Dave Welsh of Tacoma planned to put her in a match race with her boyfriend, Tom Watterson, at Graham (Speedway). (Cycle News East July 28, 1970). |

She had been issued an Professional Racing License by the AMA, who did not realize that she is a woman.
Kerry files a lawsuit in Manhattan Federal Court under the jurisdiction of famed Judge Constance Baker Motley, who is an ardent Women's Lib proponent, and is known as ultra-liberal in her decisions.

July 21, 1971: The Supreme Court of the State of Washington orders that Debbi Selden's case be transfered from the Court of Appeals to the Supreme Court for argument during the September 1971 session. (Supreme Court document, July 22, 1971). |

This makes her one of the first women in the United States to be accepted into professional racing by a major motor sports sanctioning body." |
September 21, 1971: Cycle News East reports details of Kerry Kleid's license issues.
Russ March, AMA Executive Director, explained that Miss Kleid's license had been improperly issued. He said that if Kerry files a proper application, her license would be immediately re-issued.
The license was issued and the court case was dropped. The AMA is "struggling to organize its rather confused licensing procedures."
(Cycle News East September 21, 1971) |

and that her professional debut will be October 17, at the Mt. Peter (NY) Motocross event. (American Motorcyclist magazine, October 1971). |
October 1971: an American Motorcyclist magazine article claims that "currently about 125 women hold AMA mechanics' licenses and many are extremely active in the organization's program of amateur and professional racing, not as pit row window dressing, but as integral parts of race teams, whose expertise with the tools of the trade is an established fact." (American Motorcyclist magazine, October 1971). |
November 12, 1971: Peterson and Haarmann of Tacoma Washington send a letter to Debbi Selden informing her that the AMA has paid the Supreme Court costs and that "the Supreme Court Appeal has been officially dismissed and accordingly the Trial Court's decision does stand and the American Motorcycle Association must issue you a professional racing license. (Peterson and Haarmann, October 12, 1971)
